Overview Students will recap what the five senses are from lesson one. Students will examine works of art by contemporary artists in relation to the five senses. Students will imagine what it would be like to step into a work of art and describe possible experiences when looking around and exploring. Students will discuss and analyze what each of the artists may have wanted the viewer to experience. Students will investigate and discussed the materials used by the artists. Enduring Ideas/Essential Questions In what ways can artists make connections between our senses and art? How can our senses be triggered when viewing art? National or State Learning Standards Students will: VA.912.C.1.2: Use critical-thinking skills for various contexts to develop, refine, and reflect on an artistic theme. VA.912.C.1.8: Explain the development of meaning and procedural choices throughout the creative process to defend artistic intention. VA.912.C.2.3: Process and apply constructive criticism as formative assessment for continued growth in art-making skills. VA.912.C.3.1: Use descriptive terms and varied approaches in art analysis to explain the meaning or purpose of an artwork. VA.912.O.2.3: Investigate an idea in a coherent and focused manner to provide context in the visual arts. VA.912.S.1.4: Demonstrate effective and accurate use of art vocabulary throughout the art-making process. Lesson Objectives In this lesson, students will (1) Collectively and individually discuss, examine, and interpret contemporary works; (2) collectively and individually examine works of art to explore their use of each sense; (3) collectively discuss the different ways we use our senses and how they might be triggered when viewing art; (4) asses the work of artists and the connections with our senses. Tools and Materials For this art lesson you will need sample contemporary artwork from artists that includes texture and/or object of food and flowers for example on handouts for the students. An iPad to view different artists’ websites. Introduction On the board in the classroom, write the two enduring ideas listed above. Begin with asking the students those questions and write their responses on the board. Pass out handouts with samples of work by contemporary artists (See Handouts/Resources tab). Have the students examine those works of art in relation to their senses. Recap some of the discussions from the last class from the drawings they made. Ask the students to imagine stepping into those works and describe what they would see, smell, hear, taste or if they can touch anything. Ask them to describe what they smell and what they touch for example. Discuss with the students what materials the artists used in their works. Have the students refer back to their lesson one drawing and discuss ways that they can develop their works further. Discuss with students what materials they would consider using in developing their final work of art in lesson three. Procedure
Write the two enduring ideas on the board in the classroom and begin a discussing by asking the students the questions and writing their responses on the board.
Pass out handouts of contemporary artists’ works for students to examine in relation to the five senses. (See Handouts/Resources Tab).
Discuss some of the ideas from their lesson one drawings.
Have the students imagine that they could step into works of art and describe what they would see, smell, hear taste or touch.
Ask the students to describe some of the details they would experience in stepping into a work.
Discuss with students what materials the artists may have used in their works.
Have students refer back to their drawings from lesson one and begin thinking of ways that they can develop their works further.
Discuss what materials they would consider using in developing their final work of art in lesson three.
Students will complete a student self-assessment sheet to be turned in. (See Handouts/Resources Tab).
Distribution and Clean-Up Distribute handouts of artwork samples to students to examine. Make sure to also provide the students their drawings from lesson one if they did not keep them. After the lesson, have students keep their drawings and handouts of sample art in their bags or assigned bins. Closure Students will review their previous drawings from lesson one and discuss ways that they will develop their final works of art in lesson three. Students will have examined contemporary works of art to explore using their senses and how it can relate to art. Students will have a better understanding of how viewing art triggers their understanding of their senses in art and everyday life. Students will also have a better understanding of ways that viewers may interpret their own art. Before the end of class, have a brief discussion of the lesson three and explain that students will complete a work of art with a focus on using their senses and how viewers may interpret their works. Assessment Questions and strategies to consider when determining how successful a students is demonstration their understanding of this lesson’s objectives and enduring ideas are: How well were the student’s interpretations of what the five senses are and how they can use them in art viewing? How well did students engage in discussion on the lesson? Were students able to successfully grasp the main idea of the lesson? Were students able to effectively portray their thought process of one or all of the five senses visually when viewing works of art? In comparing the student’s own assessment to the completed drawing, does the student show an understanding of the lesson? Artists or Works of Art Studied
Joana Vasconcelos, Giallina
Alexei Antonov (various still life fruit and flower paintings)
Need to find: (1) Samples of contemporary artist work that is in relation to the five senses. Formative/Summative Assessment: During the unit, teachers will continually discuss the five senses with the students and give examples of different ways that we use them. The teacher will ask students to interpret different works of art by contemporary artists in relation to the senses. The teacher will ask the students to discuss their own interpretations of the artists’ works in relation to the senses. The teacher will ask the student to explain what they have learned about the five senses in relation to art viewing. The teacher will review discussions and student self-assessment sheets to assess that students understanding of the lesson.
